Officials in Tasmania are striving to determine a magenta ooze that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with some scientists concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a portion of a southern bay about 60km south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been recorded on sections of a nearby shore and a separate bay.
Samples have been taken and submitted to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A spokesperson stated that "algal blooms are a natural occurrence in response to shifts in minerals, temperature, rainfall or illumination".
"The events are sometimes called reddish tides because the outbreaks can color the water red," the spokesperson noted. "Only some phytoplankton events are toxic, with many species functioning as a major source of food for marine life in the oceanic food chain."
"The primary reason of reddish water in these seas is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."
Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their frequency has increased in recent times, in part due to global warming and environmental waste that join together to create food-loaded oceans primed for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a type of algae that typically act as the ocean's waste processors. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their numbers that disturbs the proper operation of ecosystems.
These phenomena have been compared to underwater bushfires and can keep expanding as long as circumstances are favorable. In more extreme scenarios, delicate ocean habitats can be destroyed as sea creatures is killed or deprived of oxygen, providing more minerals for the bloom.
A southern state in the past confronted a catastrophic phytoplankton proliferation along its southern shore after a series of oceanic warm spells, which extended across a vast area. The outbreak left surfers with sore eyes and severe coughing and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to official estimates.
An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the beginning of that event stated, based on photos of the current situation, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There are many of these events around Tasmania of late," she remarked.
Coleman said the algae did not generate poisons like the organism involved in South Australia's devastating algal bloom, but it does eat tiny creatures and "numerous fish eggs", meaning marine life were particularly vulnerable.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of this algae after a outbreak of a different species, or something like a marine breeding," she added.
A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, commented it seemed the suspected bloom had "grown significantly" and indicated the fish farming business was the primary suspect, pointing to similar cases elsewhere.
"So Tasmania needs to deliver a strong warning here, the authorities and the regulators need to react to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've collected and we need to put word out the community here," she emphasized.
She said she had concerns for public safety after experiencing a numbness along her body while being splashed with tainted seawater.
An advocacy organization has documented deceased sea creatures and deceased marine life washing ashore, with a prominent conservationist labeling the event as an "natural disaster" and calling on the local leader to see and "assume command the response that government must be doing".
"The leader needs to understand this is a catastrophe in the making, financially as well as for nature."
Talking with the media, the premier said he was did not know of any relationships between the algae outbreak and the salmon industry, emphasizing laboratory analysis was required before determinations could be reached.
"We must make certain our waterways are environmentally safe and viable," he remarked.
"The 1,200 beaches across the state are our assets and we need to ensure the people and our industry can coexist to use our aquatic resources effectively and in a lasting way."
